Beyond Buzzwords: Redefining Self-Care for Diverse Populations

  • Attendees will explore the cultural implication linked to the philosophy of "self-care". Specifically, attendees will understand how the concept of wellness morphed into self-care and consequently became culturally irrelevant to many.
  • Attendees will apply the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies to wellness plans, assessing the cultural relevance of such plans.
  • Attendees will create a culturally sensitive wellness plan that could be used for counselors, educators, students, or clients.

Marisa White, PhD, LPC

Marisa White, PhD, LPC, has a strong counselor identity and has experience in the areas related to counselor education, including teaching, counseling, supervision, research, and service to the profession. She is also a licensed professional counselor (LPC-Ohio).

She earned her PhD in Counselor Education and currently works as a Core Faculty member at Walden University. She has been teaching at the collegiate level since 2006 and has taught a variety of classes at the bachelor, master, and doctorate levels.

Her clinical experience is vast. She has worked in several residential treatment centers and a counseling center housed on a university campus. Prior to becoming a faculty member, she worked as a licensed professional counselor and drug and alcohol counselor at a community mental health center, specializing in work with populations who have a HIV positive status and clients who have an addiction diagnosis and/or a criminal background.

Marisa has demonstrated a commitment to service within the counseling profession and her community. Her national service positions have included serving on the Counselor Educator Task Force for Chi Sigma Iota (CSI), the ACA Public Awareness and Support Committee, Legislative and Advocacy Committee of IAAOC, Conference Development Committee for AARC, Editorial Board Member for the Counseling and Values Journal (ASERVIC), and an Ad Hoc Editor for the Counselor Education and Supervision journal. On a state level, she has served as the Tennessee Licensed Professional Counselor Association president, secretary, and membership co-chair and a member on the Tennessee Counseling Association ethics committee. She was also the membership chair of the Ohio Counseling Association, the President of the North Central Ohio Counseling Association.

Marisa is always looking for new ways to collaborate with colleagues and advance the profession of counseling. Her research interests include the use of technology in counselor education, advocacy for the counseling profession, social justice concerns for counselors, ethics in counseling, and leadership development.
